When my firstborn started primary school, she shared that she was inspired to be a writer and illustrator. She had always enjoyed doodling and seemed to enjoy reading and writing. I wanted to be her enabler and encourager, thus sourcing for books that would help her on her journey as a writer.

I FOUND THESE! I started with Usborne’s My First Story Writing Book and found it great for my lower primary kid. The illustrations were great and helped to engage her in the fun writing activities. There was also a nice range of activities for her to choose from - they could be short lists, filling in speech bubbles, describing characters - we never went in order! I say “we” because it was a nice activity to do together - at times, she would write a line and I would write another; at times I gave her some ideas (trying my best not to impose them on her and allow for less than perfect grammar or spelling).

She (or maybe I?) loved it so much that I bought the Creative Writing Book (which is wordier and suits her better now that she’s almost upper primary 😱). I also realised that poetry was one aspect I had not really exposed her to and bought Write Your Own Poems as well. These activity books can easily entertain your writing enthusiasts for hours (especially during the school holidays!)

Tips to get the best value out of this...

- This activity book costs just below $20 on Book Depository, which offers free delivery worldwide.

- There are also other more specific titles like Write Your Own Adventure Stories, Write Your Own Story Book, and Write Your Own Sci-Fi and Fantasy Stories. If your child likes drawing, there’s the Write and Draw Your Own Comics.
